Curriculum Overview

Curriculum statement

‘Building on firm foundations’ Matthew 7:24&25

As a school community we believe our children possess unique gifts and talents and we celebrate these. They have the right to succeed, recognise their own greatness and develop as individuals in a respectful and caring environment. Our school ethos is firmly rooted in our Christian values with a love of learning being the foundation. Our school is all about building on firm foundations so that our LIGHTS shine brightly.

Through the delivery of our curriculum, we aim to ensure that:

  • all pupils experience a high degree of self-efficacy and worth through a range of experiences including opportunities for all to showcase their talent.
  • children will become fully engaged learners; actively reflecting on their learning, asking questions, retaining taught content and making links between subjects.
  • children will develop their knowledge and understanding of the taught content, their use of subject-specific vocabulary and language, and learning skills.
  • we instil a sense of spirituality and moral values through our Christian Vision and develop children’s cultural, artistic and physical development. Our Christian vision of ‘Building on firm foundations’ and values of Love, Inclusion, Guidance, Hope, Trust and Service, courage, hope, trust and spirit form the central spine to our central curriculum offer.

Our curriculum helps the children join up the reality of the world through investigating subject specific topics and themes to help children build a schema of understanding. Our teaching is logical and coherent and is informed by the expectations set out in the National Curriculum 2014. Having lived through a global pandemic and now being in a period of recovery, we have shaped our curriculum to take a multidisciplinary approach to learning that also ensures rigorous discrete subject sequencing, progression, skills and vocabulary development. We start this through the development of play as the medium to promote learning, building on children’s next steps. This then continues throughout the school building on the firm foundation created in Early Years. Our curriculum offer incorporates a continuous provision and enhancements approach

It is our aspiration that our curriculum is ambitious, knowledge rich, broad and deep and that we make good use of our locality and the unique opportunities it offers. From year 1, subjects are taught discretely so that children understand what it means to be a scientist, an artist, a historian and so on.  We teach the children to have empathy and understanding in order to thrive in the diverse societies that we see in our locality and in Britain as a whole in the 21st Century.

If you would like to find out more about our curriculum, please look at our website and read our subject specific documents. You are also welcome to come into school to speak to staff about our curriculum offer.

Our school Week - Our school week is 32.5 hrs per week.  In addition, we run a vast array of extra-curricular clubs which run during lunch times and after school.  We also run wrap around care which starts at 7:45am and then run until 5:30pm.

Learning in Tavy Class

Tavy Class is where our children build the Firm Foundations for learning which they will draw on throughout their time at St. George's. We plan using a floorbook approach, which ensures that learning is led by the needs and interests of the children and encourages them to become intrinsically motivated, curious learners. Alongside this child-led planning, we teach structured daily phonics and maths sessions. Most of the children’s time is spent engaged in learning through deep and meaningful play. Our environment, both indoor and outdoor, is designed to stimulate creativity, collaboration and communication. We view the environment as an additional teacher; it is open-ended, flexible and responds to a range of needs. The small, family feel of our setting means that our children build strong, positive relationships which are vital for the healthy growth of self-esteem in young children.

Reading

Children are encouraged to read at least three times a week at home. Their book will be changed after they have read it to an adult four times. We follow Twinkl Phonics for early reading and use Rhino Readers as our reading books. These books link closely to the phonics children are learning in class. We believe that reading the same text many times supports children to improve fluency and accuracy in reading much more successfully.

We also have the opportunity to visit the school library over the course of the week. Your child will bring home a new library book each Friday. These library books are to be used to support your child’s love of reading through shared story times at home; bedtime stories, read by adults to children. By reading a book from each of the different genres in our reading challenge (see back cover of reading record) your child will have experienced a wealth of different books. They will also receive a certificate when they complete the bronze, silver and gold reading challenges!

Parent engagement

Throughout the year, we plan parent events for you to attend and see what the children have been learning. We also hold workshops across the year for you to find out more about the St George’s curriculum. Once a week, we also surprise the children with a ‘Mystery Reader’ – a familiar adult who reads their favourite story, talks about their job or something special they have experienced/achieved. This isn’t restricted to parents; grandparents, older siblings, aunties and uncles can all be roped in too. We ask for your support in keeping the identity of the mystery reader a surprise, even from your own child! A sign-up sheet will be in the office so that you can pick a date which will work for you. If you think you will need more time with the children please let us know.

Tapestry

In Tavy Class we use this platform to share all of our amazing learning with you. You can also send messages to the Tavy Class team through Tapestry. This is the best way to communicate with staff and keep track of your child's progress.

PE

Our PE day is Thursday. Please wear PE kit to school on these days with hair tied back.

Please, please, please ensure that EVERY item your child brings into school is clearly labelled with their name. Items will inevitably become misplaced and it makes it a lot easier to return items to their owners when things are labelled. Thank you so much.

Learning in Plym Class

We believe that children have a right to expect a curriculum which is fun, motivating, interesting and most importantly purposeful. We strive to develop imagination through a stimulating, creative environment where every child has the opportunity to shine. We use a continuous provision approach, building on the learning through play they have experienced in Foundation Stage. Challenges are accessed throughout the day to promote independence and resilience. We learn in small groups and as a whole class. We have rainbow challenges built into the week where the children can choose their own learning and build on what they have learnt during lessons to deepen their understanding or revisit ideas they had misconceptions in.

Reading

Children are encouraged to read at least three times a week at home. Their book will be changed after they have read to an adult three times. We follow Twinkl Phonics for early reading and use Rhino Readers as our reading books. These books link closely to the phonics children are learning in class and by repeating reading the same text many times we believe the children improve fluency and accuracy in reading much more successfully.

We read every day in class, this could be individual reading to an adult, exploring texts and vocabulary through our whole class reading sessions or reading by ourselves or with a friend in provision. We also have the opportunity to visit the school library over the course of the week.

Tapestry

In Plym Class we use this platform to share all of our amazing learning with you daily. You can also send messages to the Plym Class team through Tapestry. This is the best way to communicate with staff and keep track of your child's progress.

Rainbow Challenges

Every day there are planned challenges for children to access and complete independently. These enhancements are planned carefully around the children's interests, the curriculum and interventions needed within the class. Each week the children are encouraged to complete all of the challenges to a high standard and therefore making a rainbow with the lolly sticks that they collect for each challenge. Rainbow Challenges can be seen in the children's books or on Tapestry.

Continuous Provision

In KS1 we value the importance of learning through play, investigation, challenging ourselves and independence. To enable the children opportunities for this we provide continuous provision both inside and outside the classroom.

This gives children the opportunities to:

  • Make decisions and informed choices about the resources they need.
  • Cooperate effectively and share resources appropriately.
  • Plan and communicate ideas, thinking ahead to complete each step of their idea.
  • Adapt and modify their ideas to achieve their result.
  • Try different approaches to solve problems.
  • Use a growing range of interesting and appropriate vocabulary.
  • Critically reflect on progress and outcome of their ideas .
  • Take responsibility for the organisation of the area.

PE

Pe is on Wednesday and Friday. Please wear PE kit to school on these days with hair tied back.

Homework

Homework will be added to Google Classroom each week for children in Plym Class. Each child has a Google login to access our classroom online.

They can complete the work online and 'turn it in' to their teacher online or they can complete the work on paper and send a photo to tapestry.

Learning in Tamar

We believe that every child has the right to expect quality hands-on learning experiences that are fun, engaging, and promote personal progress, to facilitate their current and future achievements We strive to create an environment where children actively participate in their learning to promote them to be independent thinkers. We learn in small groups and as a whole class. To build on the firm foundations that children have been experiencing since reception, we adopt a continuous provision approach where children can access rainbow challenges independently that extend their learning. Our approach supports self-directed learning inquiries that allow children to practice their skills, deepen their understanding or revisit ideas they had misconceptions in.

Reading

We want children to be able to read easily, fluently and with good understanding, and to develop the habit of reading widely, for both pleasure and information. To support this we assess children’s phonological awareness to provide them with reading books that are suitable for their level. We follow the Phonics, Code Breakers and Rhino Readers schemes provided by Twinkle to develop children’s reading skills. All children will have reading records to record their reading journey.

Alone side their reading books children will also have Library books that they can take home to share with you. These books provide you with the perfect opportunity to read to your child- no matter how old they are!

Tapestry

This is where we will share pictures of what has been happening in school with you. We will post whole class and induvial pictures of key learning and your child’s work, to provide you with live examples of what they have been doing.

Rainbow Challenges

Every week within our teaching provision we set Rainbow Challenges for the children to complete. These challenges are centred on the children’s learning and provide children with the opportunity to revisit their learning in a low-risk environment, where they are able to practice and develop their skills. Throughout the school, we use a lolly stick collection system where children have to collect a lolly stick for each challenge they complete. Examples of these can be found on Tapestry and the children are encouraged to upload them themselves to develop their computing skills.

Continuous Provision

At St George’s we value the importance of providing children with opportunities to learn through self-directed inquiries, to support children to become independent capable learners. We provide continuous provision both inside and outside the classroom that complements and extends their learning experiences.

This give children the opportunities to:

  • Make decisions and informed choices about the resources they need.
  • Cooperate effectively and share resources appropriately.
  • Plan and communicate ideas, thinking ahead to complete each step of their idea.
  • Adapt and modify their ideas to achieve their result.
  • Try different approaches to solve problems.
  • Use a growing range of interesting and appropriate vocabulary.
  • Critically reflect on progress and outcome of their ideas.
  • Take responsibility for the organisation of the area.
