'Building on Firm Foundations'

Intent

At St George’s Primary Academy, we recognise the importance and value of Physical Education (PE). It is our intent for the Physical Education (PE) curriculum is to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We aim to provide a high-quality PE curriculum, through using GetSet4PE, that develops pupils’ physical competence, confidence, and enjoyment of physical activity, while also fostering an understanding of healthy, active lifestyles.

Through a broad and balanced curriculum, we aim to ensure every child:

  • Participates in physical activities for a sustained period of time, ensuring pupils have the opportunities for two hours of PE a week.
  • Develops fundamental movement skills and becomes increasingly competent and confident in their ability to participate in a range of physical activities.
  • Engages in competitive and cooperative physical activities in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Understands the importance of physical activity for mental and physical health, and builds habits for lifelong fitness and well-being.
  • Has the opportunity to experience a variety of sports and physical challenges, including team games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, and outdoor adventurous activities.
  • Learns the value of fairness, inclusion, and respect through sporting participation.

Implementation

PE is taught as an area of learning in its own right as well as underpinning all of children's other learning experiences. It is taught twice a week in KS1 and KS2. In our EYFS, children access one formally taught lesson a week and have full access to both gross and fine motor skills in their provision.

We teach our children to:

  • Have fun and enjoy success in sport
  • Have the opportunity to participate and achieve in PE at their level
  • Develop their sportsmanship by experiencing positive competition
  • Learn in a safe environment
  • Have the foundations for lifelong physical activity

At St George’s, we are proud to offer enhanced PE provision through our partnership with experienced coaches from District Sports. These coaches lead engaging lunchtime activities, support our pupil playtime leaders, and work alongside staff to enrich teaching and learning in PE.

We follow the GetSet4PE scheme, carefully adapting our curriculum to suit mixed-age classes while ensuring clear progression of skills as children move through the school. At the end of each term, we hold intra-house competitions, giving pupils the opportunity to showcase their newly developed skills and demonstrate sportsmanship in a fun, supportive environment.

As part of a multi-academy trust, we also take part in a range of inter-school sports events and physical activity initiatives, helping our pupils stay active, build confidence, and foster a sense of community beyond our own school.

Impact

At St George's, Physical Education is taught as a foundation for lifelong learning and healthy living. Pupils have access to a broad range of activities and are taught with care and expertise, equipping them with the skills and confidence to remain physically active throughout their lives. Our high-quality PE curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physical pursuits, while also promoting overall physical health and well-being. Through regular opportunities to participate and compete, pupils develop character and learn important values such as fairness, acceptance, and respect.
