Y1 Phonics testing and reading at St George's

Phonics

At St. George's we use the Twinkl Phonics Scheme to deliver our lessons to ensure that all sessions are of high quality and that the teaching of phonics is consistent across the school.

The phonics test usually takes place nationally during a week in June. All children in Y1 will take the test as well as those in Y2 who, as yet, haven't passed the test.

EYFS and KS1

We use Rhino Readers books which are directly linked to our Twinkl phonics scheme. This will need to be read more than once over the week. Repetition is an important tool which allows children to process and internalise sound and letter correspondences and to give them the opportunity to experience being a successful reader. Your child will bring home two books every week; a Rhino Reader which will have been read with the teacher and a Shared Read which your child will select from the school library because they would like to share it with you!

We would appreciate your positive approach to revisiting these books throughout your week and for finding time to share the Shared Read together.

In addition, we also use  Dandelion Readers in school. This is a scheme of books which allow us to use assessment and gap fill any gaps in Phonic knowledge for children who might need a little extra support across KS1 and KS2.

KS2

Reading

All children will bring home an Independent Reading book which they have chosen themselves from their phonics phase or Coloured Book Band and a Shared Read which your child will select from the school library because they would like to share it with you!

We would appreciate your positive approach to revisiting these books throughout your week and for finding time to share the Shared Read together
